A V E R T

The organization AVERT (Averting HIV and AIDS) is an international organization based in England that are constantly working to educate, treat and care for HIV/AIDS patients. This orgranization participates in many fundraiser projects; all the money raised goes towards HIV prevention efforts, educational materials and HIV support groups and seminars.

This organization was created by a group of African American individuals who thought it was very important that they got together to educate the African American community on the HIV virus. AVERT works with many Universities to host different projects to raise money and awareness as well.

  1. Groups like AVERT are what we need to see more of to help bring down the numbers. There are far to many infections that could have been avoided simply by being educated about the virus. Hopefully the more information that is spread the less people the virus will infect.

  2. I think that its great that AVERT works with a lot of colleges and universities. Young people are at such a high risk to for contracting diseases. Especially in an envronment where there are thousands and thousands of other people around all the time, they need to be educated.

  3. Have you looked into any of the agencies in the Orlando area, Allison? Many of them use to have clubs specific to teenagers. Years ago, CENTAUR had a group of young adults that went into the schools and used theatre as a means of educating students regarding HIV Disease.

Unfortunately, due to money cuts and the increase need of money for medications, many secondary services were stopped.

Years ago, students in this course had to make a panel like you would see on the AIDS Quilt. They made it on a poster board and it represented themself. We stopped that because students did not like to record a birth and death date but it was a good educational tool.

I am looking forward to stopping in every once in awhile to read your future blogs. :>)
